Este año el Festival tomará lugar el domingo, 18 de octubre, 2009, desde las 10 am hasta las 5 pm en la Escuela Horace Mann en el barrio de la Misión en San Francisco. En el evento la Sra. Aura Beteta, una líder prominente en la comunidad nicaragüense, y el Supervisor David Campos, un inmigrante guatemalteco y líder cívico, serán honrados con el Premio de Liderazgo Festival de los Volcanes.

Prominentes músicos, poetas y artistas de rap locales están programados para actuar, incluyendo Los Ramblers, Marianao, Los Rakas, Deuce Eclipse, y el Grupo Folklorico Xochilt Celi.

La Mesa de Supervisores de San Francisco está programada para pasar una resolución nombrando el 18 de octubre el Día del Pueblo Centroamericano en reconocimiento del Festival de los Volcanes.

This year’s Festival will take place Sunday, October 18, 2009from 10 am-5pm at Horace Mann Middle School in San Francisco’s Mission District. At the event Mrs. Aura Beteta, a prominent leader in the Nicaraguan community, and Supervisor David Campos, a Guatemalan immigrant and civic leader, will be honored with the Festival de Los Volcanes Leadership award.

Performances this year include Los Ramblers, Marianao, Los Rakas, Deuce Eclipse, Grupo Folklorico Xochilt Celi, and others.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is also scheduled to pass a resolution naming October 18^th the Day of the Central American People in recognition of the Festival de los Volcanes.

Festival de Los Volcanes
El comité dirigente del Festival de los Volcanes tiene el gusto de anunciar que este año el Supervisor David Campos y Aura Beteta serán otorgados el Premio de Liderazgo Centroamericano. A los dos se les reconocerá por su servicio ejemplar a favor de la comunidad latina en general y por su apoyo al avance de los centroamericanos en el Área de la Bahía.

Nacido en Guatemala, David Campos llegó a los Estados Unidos con su familia cuando tenía 14 años. Un inmigrante indocumentado que hablaba sólo español, el Sr. Campos creció en el barrio de South Central Los Ángeles. Hoy, David es supervisor para el Distrito 9, representando a los barrios de la Misión, Bernal Heights y Portola. También el Sr. Campos es un respetado abogado para los derechos civiles.

Nacida en Nicaragua, la Sra. Aura Beteta es una líder para la justicia social y el avance cultural. En más de 50 años de labor, ha servido al gobierno nicaragüense en distintas capacidades, incluyendo como agregada cultural para el consulado nicaragüense en el Canadá y como cónsul general nicaragüense en San Francisco. En los últimos diez años ha trabajado incansablemente en solidaridad con el pueblo de Nicaragua y el resto de Centroamérica, incluyendo con la recolección de ayuda material.

El Sr. Campos y la Sra. Beteta recibirán sus premios en el segundo anual Festival de los Volcanes el 18 de octubre en la Escuela Horace Mann en el barrio de la Misión en San Francisco. Para más información favor de llamar a Ana Pérez al (415) 642-4417.

Festival de Los Volcanes

The Festival de los Volcanes steering committee is pleased to announce that this year Supervisor David Campos and Aura Beteta will be awarded the Festival de los Volcanes Central American Leadership award. Both individuals will be recognized for their outstanding service on behalf of the Latino community in general and in support of the advancement of Central Americans in the Bay Area.

Born in Guatemala, David Campos came to the United States with his family when he was 14 years old. An undocumented immigrant who spoke only Spanish, David grew up in the barrio of South Central Los Angeles. Today, David is the supervisor for District 9, representing the Mission, Bernal Heights and Portola neighborhoods. Mr. Campos is also a respected civil rights attorney.

Ms. Aura Beteta is a Nicaraguan-born social justice and cultural advancement leader. In her more than 50 years of work, she has served for the Nicaraguan government in a number of roles including diplomatic Cultural attaché for the Nicaraguan Council in Canada and as the Nicaraguan Consul General in San Francisco. In the last ten years she has worked tirelessly to gather material aid and work in solidarity with people in Nicaragua and the rest of Central America.

Mr. Campos and Ms. Beteta will receive their awards at the Second Annual Festival de los Volcanes celebration on Oct. 18^th at Horace Mann Middle School in San Francisco’s Mission District. For more information please call Ana Perez at (415) 642-4417.

The Festival Advisory and Steering Committee is comprised of immigrants and the descendents of immigrants from Central America and elsewhere in Latin America, and includes people engaged in a variety of professional fields.
